Key Takeaways
- Story editing starts before the reporting/writing process even begins. (It begins with determining whether an idea has legs, and if so, how to focus that idea.)
- Machete before scalpel. (Don’t try to do line edits until you have all the structural pieces in place).
- You cannot do all your edits on paper. This is audio, and you have to HEAR a story to know if it works.
- Always point out the strengths of a script — not just its flaws. (This isn’t just to be polite; it’s how you get producers to build on their strengths and make a story great).
