Hillary loves helping producers strategize how to make their work stand out in a crowded field. From pitches to story structure to show concepts to crafting compelling narratives, Hillary is skilled at finding surprising ways to make audio projects sparkle. With more than two decades of experience filing stories for public radio and making fiction and nonfiction podcasts, Hillary can also advise on interviewing, scripting, directing, audience engagement, and bringing levity to heavy topics.
Hillary is excited to work with anyone, but especially women+ and other marginalized voices. Producers looking to tell unconventional stories or push boundaries in the medium will be a great fit.
Hillary Frank is the award-winning creator of The Longest Shortest Time, a podcast about the surprises and absurdities of raising other humans, and Here Lies Me, an audio drama about middle school. She has worked as a story editor on many projects, including Why Oh Why, Everything Is Alive, Rough Translation, The Truth, and 30 for 30’s Six Who Sat. Hillary is also the author and illustrator of Weird Parenting Wins and three young adult novels. Her first radio story was an unsolicited pitch to This American Life that she made using a microcassette answering machine and a shiny red boombox — which she hopes is proof to aspiring producers that with a little creativity, getting your foot in the door really is possible. (Yes, it is also proof that she’s been doing this stuff since olden times.)
Hillary is a generous, insightful, and focused editor. She has an incredible ability to sense what the emotional center of a piece is and then make choices to strengthen it. I am sure if she was editing this testimonial it would be better.
Ian Chillag, Host and Creator, Everything Is Alive
I worked with Hillary Frank in my capacity as Founder and EP at Transmitter Media. She came on board to serve as our editor on an episode of 30 for 30 that ended up winning a Webby! Her work in refining story and structure, her ear for golden tape, her encouragement of the team through production challenges, and her precision in line edits made the story sing.
Gretta Cohn, Founder and EP, Transmitter Media
Hillary spoke to a group of us at Stitcher and SiriusXM about her original fiction podcast, Here Lies Me. It was inspiring to hear about her process of working with talented teen actors to make something that feels so authentically, awkwardly middle school. Many of us came away from our discussion with Hillary wanting to make fiction projects of our own.
