In this 4 week class, Yowei Shaw breaks down Invisibilia’s signature method for creating momentum in stories that are driven by ideas and emotion, and not just plot. The class will explore how to identify and create the emotional, intellectual, and plot arcs in every story, and how to use them to shape your writing, production, and pacing to generate maximum electricity.
Students will practice mapping out the three arcs in their own work, and walk away with a framework and specific tools for approaching structure during the writing and editing process. Ultimately, the goal of this class is to break free from the tyranny of plot, so that students can make all kinds of stories a pleasurable ride for listeners!
The class is designed for intermediate and/or advanced learners.
Students are encouraged to bring an outline for a story they’re working on, or have already worked on, but it’s not required.

Meet the instructor
Yowei Shaw
Yowei Shaw is an award-winning podcast journalist, host, and producer. She spent many years at NPR’s Invisibilia - first as a producer, then as host & editorial lead - where she reported on all kinds of messy topics, like racial sexual preferences, the status of friend therapy, and the power of trolling your boss. Her work has also appeared in places like This American Life and Pop Up Magazine, and once upon a time, she made really good elevator music in Chinatown, Philadelphia.
