Session Details

  • 60 minute mentorship session via Zoom
  • James is available Monday through Friday from 3 to 8 pm ET. He can usually accommodate anyone outside the U.S. or in a time zone that makes his usual hours difficult. 
James is a great mentor if you’re looking to learn more about field producing, longform storytelling, true crime podcast production or managing a career as a freelance audio producer. Having spent two years reporting on the 2020 presidential election (which took him around the country), and he is eager to share his experience field reporting, producing, and identifying regular people for audio stories. He is excited to work with mentees who are interested in human-focused storytelling with a journalistic foundation.

About James

James Morrison (he/him) is an award-winning broadcast reporter and podcast producer with 10+ years of experience in the industry. He’s currently a writer and producer for the Smithsonian podcast Sidedoor. He's launched and produced several podcasts, including the true crime podcast Hell & Gone, by iHeartMedia. He's reported stories for NPR, Marketplace, and multiple other national outlets, and has worked as a field producer for NPR's 1A. His reporting focuses on politics, health, and environmental justice — including the intersection of all these topics. Born in the Cherokee Nation, and currently based in DC, he is an active member of NAJA
