  • Friday, September 27th, 2024.
  • 10am - 12pm PT / 1-3pm ET
  • Virtual
  • 120 minute workshop
  • $100 AIR members

During this workshop, with an iPad or iPhone, and with no more than $5 spent on apps, you’ll create a 1-2 minute, multi-track song that you can:
  • change the sound of by swapping digital instruments (piano, guitar, bass, strings, percussion, etc.)
  • record in more than one key (a “happy” version and a “sad” version)
  • record at more than one tempo (a fast version and a slow version)
  • export as stems (a .wav file for each instrument) that you can import into your DAW of choice when producing your next podcast episode or other audio piece

We’ll cover some basic music concepts – just enough to understand the apps we’re using. But our focus will be on the step-by-step process for composing music using Piano Motifs and GarageBand for iOS.

This is a hands-on workshop, so be sure your iOS device is charged and ready to go. (It’s strictly an iOS workshop – we will not use Mac or PC computers, only phones and ipads).

  • Your iOS device should be running iOS 14 or higher.
  • You will need to purchase the Piano Motifs app ($4) and install 2-3 free apps before the workshop. Details and links will be posted on the SoundPath course page.
  • You will need a minimum of 2.1 GB of free space on your iOS device to install GarageBand, if you don’t already have it. You’ll need another 50 MB for Piano Motifs.
  • Optional music apps will require up to another 1 GB of storage.

Key Takeaways

  • You’ll leave the workshop with:
  • an original 1-2 minute, multi-track song, that has a main melody plus accompaniment
  • all rights to the song you create
  • “stems” for all tracks/instruments saved as .wav files
  • the ability to create infinite original musical works using only an iOS device and free or inexpensive iOS apps

Who is this class for?

  • Non-musicians who want to create their own music for their audio projects.
  • Musicians are also welcome to participate – come see how iOS music apps can spark creativity and offer another way to compose music.
  • You should be comfortable installing apps, using the Files app to locate files on the device, sharing files, changing settings, navigating between apps, etc. Experience with GarageBand for iOS is helpful but not required.
