This course challenges traditional storytelling conventions by guiding students to create audio experiences that prioritize sonic textures, embodied listening, and visceral emotional impact.

Sound has the ability to change our mood, awaken our senses and conjure past memories and future fantasy. But it can also impact our body. It has the ability to turn us on, make us shiver, and cause our heart to race, our breathing to deepen.
This course challenges traditional storytelling conventions by guiding students to create audio experiences that prioritize sonic textures, embodied listening, and visceral emotional impact. Students will develop embodied production techniques, explore experimental sound design, and analyze and create works that evoke powerful physical responses.
There are two homework assignments using concepts learned in the class, both of which will build your portfolio.

Who is this class for?
This class is for both newish to audio or more established people looking to overcome creative blocks, liberate themselves from traditional storytelling techniques, and those who are ready to deepen their artistic daily practices. Through class assignments, students will create sound rich work that they can use in their portfolios and as experimental catalysts for larger work.
This is for folks who feel they are trapped in their analytical mind and are looking to feel more embodied, in their body, and alive in their environment. This is for folks who want to make audio pieces that aren’t just consumed but deeply felt. For those feeling narrative ennui who want to feel enlivened and inspired.
Meet the instructor
Kristina Loring
Kristina Loring is a story editor, sound artist, and audio producer, who works across genre and form to create media experiences that you feel in your body. She was the Head of Audio at Dipsea, a feminist audio erotica app, for four years. Before that, she created the interactive cooking show Cooking By Ear that invited listeners into the homes of celebrity guests to chat in the interstices of making a recipe.
Using hands-on installations and interactive performance to bring the audio to life, her work blends documentary-style interviews, field recordings, and fiction writing to foster connection, intimacy, and new emotional realms for listeners to explore. Her most recent interactive somatic sound performance ‘Punk Angels’ (2023) was performed live at the Four Chickens Art Gallery in San Francisco. Her sound installation, “Message in a Bottle,” (2021) was selected as part of the Sound Scene Festival in partnership with the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum. She's taught genre-bending narrative audio workshops to audiences in the Netherlands, Colombia, Italy and the U.S.
