Best Practices for Reported Podcasts

Course covered ethics in podcasting, providing a solid ethics foundation for anyone who finds themselves without the checks and balances of a traditional newsroom. Best practices in transparency, accuracy, sourcing and booking will also be discussed.

Ethical codes for newsrooms are often crafted by people who don’t bear much resemblance to the audiences they’re covering. In this course, participants will learn how to create ethical codes for their podcasts based on their own values, and those of their audiences. 
Best practices in transparency, accuracy, sourcing and booking will also be discussed, all tailored to the needs of independent producers. This course aims to provide a solid ethics foundation for anyone who finds themselves without the checks and balances of a traditional newsroom.

Requirements

Students will get the most out of this class if they have some familiarity with radio or podcast production and some experience producing original narrative audio content.

Ann Marie Awad

Ann Marie Awad (they/she) is an independent podcast producer and story editor. Creator of On Something, a show all about life after marijuana legalization, Awad has worked as journalist for more than a decade and is an alumna of Newmark Graduate School of Journalism. Awad has also worked at Columbia Journalism School, helping to create teaching tools for journalism students, and provides journalism and podcasting instruction to individuals and organizations. 2016 AIR New Voices scholar.
