CLASS - JAN 30 TO Feb 27, 2022

Behind the Mic: Using Your Primal Voice

You have natural instincts that affect your voice! This class, led by long-time public radio host Christina Shockley, will focus on the evolution of language, the primal voice, and how humans were meant to communicate (news flash: it’s not in a room by ourselves in front of a mic!). You'll stretch your voice in new ways and gain an understanding of what's happening in your mind and body when you hit record or go on the air. By the end of the class you will have produced a short feature, and have further developed your rich, authentic voice.

This is an advanced class that builds upon the themes and ideas introduced in Behind the Mic: Channeling Your Authentic Voice, which is a prerequisite to taking this class. If you haven't taken the prior class, Christina is offering shorter make-up classes ahead of the start date, details below.

We ask AIR members to pay the full AIR member price ($480), which includes the real cost of running classes on SoundPath. If you are in a position of financial hardship, a sliding scale option is available.
We will not request proof of income for sliding scale enrollment. We will reach out to you to discuss sharing a testimonial or feedback on the class.

You have natural instincts that affect your voice! This class will focus on our primal selves and how humans were meant to communicate (news flash: it’s not in a room by ourselves in front of a mic!). By understanding how language likely evolved and our primal instincts, you will gain a deeper understanding and increased appreciation for what you ask yourself to do when you hit record, go on the air to tell stories, or interview. You will get in touch with what your body and brain do naturally and use those instincts to your advantage.
This class will help you further develop your rich, authentic voice through vocal and movement exercises. We will also apply our primal voices to writing and delivery methods. You'll have more confidence when you record or go on the air and further develop your "vocal foundation" to continue to build up your genuine, authentic voice.

Requirements

Required text: The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron

Audio editing software is helpful, but not necessary.

You must have a way to record your voice. This can be on your phone.

You will need space to move around and an environment in which you can use your voice to the fullest.

  • You will have ~25 pages of required reading before the first class.
  • You will need at least 10 minutes first thing in the morning each and every morning for personal reflection.
  • You will have ~20-30 pages of reading each week.
  • You will need an hour each week for a personal, creative endeavor.
  • You will have a homework assignment each week that will take you approx 1 hour.
  • You will have a final project - a 3 minute piece called “My Voice.” You should set aside at least 30 minutes each week to plan. Near the final week/s of the class you will likely need to commit more time.

Therefore, please expect to devote about 6.5 hours each week (including class time) to this course.

Depending on student interest you may meet in a small group each week for one hour. This would be in groups of 2 or 4 (or more), and not involve me, although I’ll be available anytime to answer questions!
